Having a large number of back-links is key to ranking in the search engines. That's pretty much well known. I've always been good at testing stuff and analyzing results. It probably has something to do with the way my brain is wired, but it made me a very good living for 25 years, and is standing me in good stead in my online ventures. I actually like testing stuff....
